The Reading Clinic is currently offering\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0programs designed to assist struggling students with written expression:<\/p>\n<h2>YES! Writing Program &#8211;\u00a0<span class=\"style1\"><span class=\"style3\">grades 1-3<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Reading Clinic has introduced a program for students who need to focus on the very early skills required for writing success.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of this program are for beginning writers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to gain automaticity in printing by mastering letter\u00a0sounds and letter formation<\/li>\n<li>to learn basic parts of speech and simple sentence writing<\/li>\n<li>to systematically be introduced to spelling together with capitalization, punctuation, and early elements of grammar<\/li>\n<li>to work on composing simple sentences and eventually connecting them on a single topic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Program Details:<\/h3>\n<p>Students will be assessed to determine the appropriate starting point in the program.\u00a0 The writing program will be tailored to the needs of the individual student.\u00a0 Parents will receive a written report and have a feedback meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Mastery learning is our goal throughout, so\u00a0the rate of progress for each student will vary as they acquire new skills.<\/p>\n<p>This program is appropriate for students in grade 2\/3, but may also be helpful for students in grades 1 through 4 depending on the skill level they have already acquired.\u00a0 Some students best suit a combination of this and the following program outlined below.<\/p>\n<p>Students should expect to commit to a block of 24 one to one sessions and need to attend a minimum of twice weekly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twice weekly sessions are available Mon\/Wed or Tues\/Thurs. Sessions start times are 3:00, 4:00, or 5:15 pm at the east end location (559 Bagot St.). All sessions are 55 minutes in length.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Please call the clinic (613)547-5179 for more information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Session times may also be available at 10:30, 11:30\u00a0am and 1:00 pm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>YES! Writing Program &#8211;\u00a0<span class=\"style1\"><span class=\"style3\">grades 4-8<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The junior\/intermediate Writing Program is based on the Learning Strategies Curriculum, it is a research based program developed by the University of Kansas.<\/p>\n<p>There are 3 strategies: Sentence Writing Strategy &#8211; Fundamental<\/p>\n<p>Sentence Writing Strategy &#8211; Proficiency<\/p>\n<p>Paragraph Writing Strategy<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style16\">The goals of the program are for students to learn\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style16\">how to write \u2018complete\u2019 simple sentences and how to extend them and make them more detailed<\/li>\n<li class=\"style16\">how to write compound, complex, and compound- complex sentences and punctuate them correctly<\/li>\n<li>how to write sequential (narrative and step-by-step), descriptive, expository(providing reasons, facts, or examples), and compare and contrast paragraphs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Program Details:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"style16\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Students are initially assessed to determine their current level of writing and spelling ability and to determine which strategies need to be taught.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style16\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After an initial assessment of the student&#8217;s writing and spelling, the results of this assessment will be discussed with parents and a written report provided.\u00a0 This will establish the level of the student&#8217;s writing and spelling difficulties and determine their programming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style16\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to the program goals, there are goals set for the student individually based on the assessment results. Spelling could become a main focus for some students, and for others it would only be addressed incidentally. Examples of student specific goals could be proper use of pronouns, capitalizing the pronoun \u2018I\u2019, understanding contractions or homophones, correct use of the articles \u2018a\u2019, \u2018an\u2019 and \u2018the\u2019, subject verb agreement, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style16\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 Strategies are taught through teacher-directed steps.\u00a0 Care is taken to move the student from a high level of support, to mastery of the strategies, and eventually to independence.\u00a0 Although fast-paced instruction is used, the pace is also determined by the student&#8217;s facility in acquiring the strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style16\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When the students are finished their work at the clinic, a reassessment will be administered to track their progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style16\">Students should expect to commit to a block of 25 one to one sessions and need to attend a minimum of twice weekly, although more frequent attendance is encouraged for more rapid gains, and students are welcome to attend up to 3 sessions weekly (by adding Friday),or 4 sessions weekly (by combining the Mon\/Wed with the Tues\/Thurs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twice weekly sessions are available Mon\/Wed or Tues\/Thurs. \u00a0Sessions start times are at 3:00, 4:00, or 5:15 pm at the east end location (559 Bagot St.). Writing Program:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writing is an inherently difficult task.\u00a0 There are multiple skills required; not only must a student generate ideas, but they must then express them\u00a0coherently, in a sequential manner, all the while monitoring spelling and the mechanics of language, and then get everything down on paper<strong>!\u00a0 For students who struggle with writing, breaking down the components of writing and providing sound strategies and opportunities to practise to mastery, significantly\u00a0reduces anxiety and builds confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;Recent research by\u00a0Graham and colleagues (Graham &amp; Harris, 2003;Graham,Harris,&amp;Mason, in press) has found that\u00a0<em>a more structured and explicit approach can be more effective than a less structured approach<\/em>\u00a0for improving the writing of students with special needs and of students with average achievement levels.&#8221;<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0-Education Ministry of Ontario, Education for All 2005<\/h4>\n<p>The goal of this writing program is to provide students, through explicit instruction, with the skills, strategies, and confidence to best prepare them for academic success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research tells us that students with learning problems, including those with learning disabilities, can achieve success despite their knowledge and skill deficits, by acquiring and using specific learning strategies.
